Scare in central Delhi as rogue bikers return

NEW DELHI: Rogue bikers were back to haunt commuters in central Delhi late on Friday evening. They were spotted driving rashly around Tilak Marg, Bahadurshah Zafar Marg and ITO.

At least 15-20 bikers descended on Delhi Gate area, zipped around and honked. Some of them performed stunts weaving through traffic, which was brought to a screeching halt. They headed for east Delhi after taking rounds of the Tilak lane, Barakhamba Road and India Gate around midnight.

"The bikers stopped their daredevilry on seeing a PCR van near the police headquarters, but stepped on the gas once out of sight. Since the roads were unmanned, the bikers, most of them wearing skull caps, ran amok. They shouted and waved as they maneuvered dangerously," said an onlooker who was returning home at the time.

The cops, who have been on the back foot after being criticized for using excessive force, checked about 288 vehicles, of which 237 were bikes, on Friday night. "Night bikes were challaned under various sections of the MV Act and four bikes were impounded over improper documents," said a senior police officer from the New Delhi district.

While senior cops said they had not received any complaint about stunt bikers, sources said their hands are tied when "permissions" are granted for weekend gatherings in the area as avoid hurting any religious sentiments. They also claimed to be going easy ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

When asked about the action against rogue bikers, cops claimed to have maintained the drive, which is intensified during the weekend, that is, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A few months ago, a 19-year-old teenager had lost his life after an inspector happened to fire at the tyres of the bike being driven rashly but the bullet hit the boy on the back. The magistrate had recommended action against the cop.
