DTC spokesperson RS Minhas said, "The drive was started along with the help of the Delhi traffic police. Since it started, six vehicles have been impounded." The bus queue shelters which fall in the worst offender category include bus stops in Tikona Park in Kashmere Gate, Madhuban Chowk, GT Karnal road bypass, Uttam Nagar, district centre Janakpuri, Madhu Vihar, Anand Vihar, Najafgarh, Dwarka More, Hari Nagar clock tower and several more. A senior DTC official added, "There have been discussions with Delhi traffic police about clearing the bus stops after it was found accidents are occurring due to lack of space at bus queue shelters." The drive will be continued for the next few months.
Not surprisingly, the vehicles found to be the repeat encroachers were Gramin Sewa vehicles, RTVs, taxis, private cars and private buses. A senior DTC official said, "The encroachments had made the bus shelters inaccessible. By clearing the shelters, buses now have proper space to stop for commuters." The number of vehicles challaned till date is 440. The matter was taken up on a war footing, said an official, after commuters filed a complaint in the public grievance cell. As part of the joint drive with Delhi traffic police, DTC is also targeting physical encroachments. "Sometimes, it's not just vehicles that have been illegally parked but also kiosks set up. The drive will clear the shelters of all such encroachments," added the DTC official.
