Police said the woman, Dimple Rathee, was returning home to Akash Kunj apartments in Rohini sector 9 when, around 9pm, she noticed smoke from the car bonnet . She parked on the roadside and managed to get out in time.
A silver Honda City standing next to the burning car also caught fire. It took three fire tenders about an hour to douse the blaze. Police said the Honda was owned by Wrideep Narayan, a resident of the same apartment.
Five people have lost their lives to car fires in Delhi so far this year. The vehicles were all relatively new and manufactured by well-known car makers.
In her statement to police, Rathee said she and her husband Sikander Pal had bought the new WagonR three years back and the car had been serviced regularly.
Rathee, was returning after a visit to a relative's house in Rohini, when the accident occurred . The statement said she was driving at a slow speed and could therefore stop quickly and get out before the car's doors got jammed.
Police said they had taken both the cars into custody, which apparently had started around the engine area. Police said the Wagon R was a petrol car. They said they would also probe whether the engine overheated due to the hot weather.
