NEW DELHI: The hunger strike by members of the National Students' Union of India at Delhi University's north campus was cut short on Tuesday night by the police. Following the police action, protesters staged demonstration outside HRD minister, Smriti Irani's home on Wednesday morning.

The protesters — about six of them were present at the time — were demanding a roll-back of the four-year undergraduate programme, launched last year. They were picked up at about 11 pm on Tuesday.

"A large number of police personnel forcefully evicted our volunteers from the Arts faculty. It is very clear that the police force was deployed by the Delhi University administration after the NSUI refused to budge from their stand," says a statement issued by the NSUI.

The members who had been on strike and some others protested against this "eviction" at minister of HRD, Smriti Irani's residence.

"NSUI will continue its fight for the justice of students and will continue taking up this cause till our demand of rollback is accepted," says the statement. NSUI had been demanding a rollback of the programme which they had initially supported and later, remained silent on.
