MMPs are individual projects under the larger scheme of the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP). Services under some of the MMPs include online filing of tax returns and the setting up of Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) for processing of passport applications. Though 31 MMPs exist under various ministries right now, barring a few, not many have taken off in popularity and remain plagued by outdated technological builds.
In the first phase the projects (some of which are MMPs) identified for re-examination are Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), e-Courts, Transport, Treasury, Commercial Taxes and PDS. "We will also examine National Social Assistance Programmes (NSAP) and Prisons, though these are not MMPs," says R S Sharma, the newly appointed secretary at the DeitY.
The 10 new MMPs which will be considered for implementation include Roads and Highways Information System (RAHI), Women and Child Development and a "common IT roadmap for para military forces".
"There is a need to re-structure MMPs - they are six years old, and technology has changed a lot since then. There are new modes of delivery with smartphones and tablets. We need to redesign applications to leverage social media too. We are forming committees to review a potential redesign of the older projects like those on PDS and health," says Sharma.
