In 1995, Palam and Safdarjung experienced heatwave conditions for 10 days.
The city, however, got some relief on Wednesday when the maximum temperature fell to 43.6 degrees Celsius, still four degrees above normal. The Indian Meteorological Department expects the maximum temperature to fall by another two or three degrees over the next few days.
There are two criterions for heatwave. When maximum temperature at a station is more than 40 degrees Celsius but five degrees above normal, then it's a heatwave. If it is six degrees above normal, then it's a severe heatwave. Heatwave is also declared when maximum temperature remains 45 degrees or more, irrespective of the departure from normal temperature for that season.
"Temperature has fallen by 1.5 degrees Celsius. It will fall further on Thursday. There will be a dust storm or some thunder activity in Delhi on Thursday but there may not be any rain. Dust storms are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi but there may be some rain in Rajasthan," said B P Yadav, director, IMD. There is no western disturbance but temperature will still come down due to winds coming from the Arabian Sea which are cooler.
The Met has predicted a cloudy sky and thunderstorm for Thursday. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 43 degrees Celsius.
