Bangkok designer’s robbery trip to Dariba ends at IGI

NEW DELHI: Sitting thousands of kilometres away in Bangkok, a man plotted a sensational robbery at the wellknown bullion market here, came down to India and executed it successfully with the help of two friends on Tuesday night. However, one rash move — shooting the jeweller at a slight protest — got a huge police team after him and in less than 16 hours, the man was nabbed from IGI airport while trying to fly back.

Karan Valecha, a jewellery designer, hatched a plot rivalling crime fiction; police found that he flew to India just to commit crimes. Police are looking at his escapades and possible links with the underworld . Teams are raiding several places across the country to nab the two other hit men.

The robbery, which has sent Chandni Chowk jewellers into a tizzy, was reported at 9pm. The victim, Kanhaiya Lal, was about to close his shop on the first floor of a crowded building in Dariba Kalan. His son and a worker were helping him out.

Three armed men barged in and asked everyone to raise their hands. As they began to gather the jewellery, Lal reportedly hit one of them with a hammer and tried to raise the alarm. One of the assailants opened fire and Lal was hit in the abdomen . As the men made off with the loot, Lal was shifted to AIIMS Trauma Centre but couldn't be saved.

"We registered a case and a team, including SHO Kotwali , Pramod Gupta and the ACP, was formed. We analysed the CCTV footage frame by frame. One of the accused was spotted," said
DCP (north) Sindhu Pillai.

Local inputs revealed that the shooters had stayed in a hotel in Paharganj and had done a recce of the shops. Call records and documents recovered from the hotel helped the to piece together a tentative plot. They believed that the accused may try to flee out of India so airports were alerted and lookout notices circulated.

Karan Valecha was nabbed at the by immigration officials. "He revealed that he had been living in Bangkok for the past four years and used to come to India sporadically. In 2010, he got a job in Bangkok and had living there ever since. One of his brother is settled in Bangkok . As he had worked with a local jeweller a few years ago, he was familiar with Chandni Chowk's inns and outs. This helped him plan the crimes," said the DCP.
