NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police constable who had been trailing a history-sheeter was shot dead in a blind alley on Monday afternoon. Although residents of the area reported seeing another man entering the lane, so far nobody has claimed witnessing the shooting. To add to the mystery, the bullet that killed constable Shivraj Tomar (45) was of the prohibited 9mm bore (not sold to civilians).

Tomar, who was posted with the Jaffrabad police station since January, was shot from point-blank range after a scuffle in Jyoti Nagar, northeast Delhi. Sources said that Tomar had been working on several cases as he had a good criminal intelligence network.

Police have not named a suspect officially, but a source said a history-sheeter from the Nand Nagri area who is involved in around 40 cases, including two murders, many attempts to murder, robberies and rape, is likely to be involved. Tomar was investigating his role in a robbery case.

Police are questioning Tomar's senior, a sub-inspector he was in touch with, for details. A family member said Tomar received a call from this senior and left in a hurry. "He left in his Hyundai Verna car without telling his wife where he was going, only saying he would have lunch in office," said Shivpal, Tomar's elder brother. An hour after Tomar left, one of his colleagues called up Shivpal to say he had been shot and taken to hospital.

People in Jyoti Nagar said they saw Tomar parking his car on the main road and entering a narrow lane beside a temple at Durgapuri Chowk. Another man whose face was covered with a white cloth had entered the lane minutes earlier. "I heard a gunshot and ran to the end of the lane where I found Tomar lying in a pool of blood," said Dharampal, who owns a shop in the area and informed police. He said he didn't see the suspect leaving the lane and presumed he had fled through another lane that leads to the main road.

Tomar had joined the force in 1988. He is survived by his wife and a 16-year-old son. His 19-year-old daughter had died of a heart disease in May.

Tomar's body was sent for postmortem late in the evening and will be handed over to his family on Tuesday. Senior police officials met the family members to condole his death. The family said Tomar had always taken up risky assignments. "He was earlier posted with the special staff and had helped police catch several criminals using his local intelligence. All the senior officers knew him and had faith in his work," said Shivpal.
