Old methods make policing risky

NEW DELHI: Almost 40 policemen have lost their lives on duty in the past two years. While the department maintains that steps are taken to ensure their safety, Delhi Police personnel say little is done for them.

While 24 policemen were killed in 2012, 12 policemen died on duty in 2013. Most policemen say they depended on traditional methods to catch criminals, which makes them vulnerable. They add that training in modernized investigation and detection techniques is seldom organized.

After the Jonty border incident in November 2012, where a constable was shot dead by slain gangster Neetu Dabodia, cops had become more careful while countering criminals. A series of measures were introduced and special attention was paid to policemen in crime-prone areas. Cops in outer Delhi were given new weapons and officers were verbally assured of permission to use their weapons.

The Rs 4 crore for training should be used to teach constables modern ways to counter crooks, an officer said.

As per NCRB data, the maximum number of policemen killed are between 35 to 45 years old. Police officials say officers in this age group have a considerable amount of experience which makes them take more risks.
