A Delhi Public School, Rohini, bus taking 40 students and four teachers home was forcibly stopped near Japanese Park in northwest Delhi by two men in an Alto car apparently because the bus did not give them way. The men thrashed the driver with an iron rod they pulled out of the bus and also hit a woman teacher. Eyewitnesses said the driver was thrown off his seat under the impact of the blows. He received head injuries.
Half an hour later, the scene was replayed in Dwarka, where a G D Goenka School bus was intercepted by a man in a Scorpio for the same reason. After an argument with the bus driver, the man brought out a hammer from his car and assaulted the driver. He also used the tool to smash windows of bus, which left one student with injuries in his hand.
No one has been arrested in either case. The assaults left children in shock, some of whom started crying. In the Dwarka incident, many students tried to get off the bus in panic.
The first incident was reported from Rohini area in northwest Delhi. The school bus plying on route number R-3 had left the school around 2.15pm.
"As we reached the Japanese Park, we heard a car honking continuously from behind. The driver was trying to give him way but could not as the road was narrow due to ongoing construction work. As the bus neared a tree, a white coloured Alto overtook us and forced the bus to stop," a woman teacher in the bus told TOI.
The two men got off the car and tried to pull driver out. They punched him several times after which one of them pulled out an iron bar from window of the bus. They were hitting the driver with the rod when one of the woman teachers requested them to stop. Even she wasn't spared. One of the attackers hit her on the neck with the bar and threatened her to stay away.
The horror would have continued but for another bus from the same school reaching the spot. As the driver and the helper of that bus rushed to help, the two attackers fled in their car bearing a Haryana registration number. Witnesses said there were two other men in the car who did not come out.
One of the teachers called up the police. The driver was provided medical help before the bus moved on. The police, however, have not managed to nab the assailants. When contacted, school principal Rita Sen said the incident was shocking and that school had filed a formal police complaint on Friday.
Outer district police said they were trying to track the driver.
The second incident was reported from Uttam Nagar area of west Delhi around 3pm. Students of G D Goenka School were heading home around 3pm on Thursday when a Scorpio driver began honking for way. The bus, however, could not move to a side because of traffic on the road.
The Scorpio overtook the bus near metro pillar 668 and forced it to stop by blocking the way. Witnesses said a verbal exchange of abuses followed, after which the Scorpio driver started an assault with a hammer.
A woman teacher intervened and requested the Scorpio driver to stop the intimidation. She cajoled the attacker to return to his car, citing the danger he was posing to the students. An injured student was provided with medical help. The school could not be contacted for comment.
The incident led to a pile up on the Uttam Nagar-Najafgarh road. The bus driver informed the police of the attack and gave them details of the Scorpio. The cops said they had identified the driver and a case under various sections had been registered at Uttam Nagar police station. "He will be arrested soon," a senior cop said.
