30,000 come to cheer as Modi holds fort

NEW DELHI: Independence Day mornings are always wet in Delhi, goes the urban legend, but on Friday the dark clouds gathered over Red Fort made an exception for the 30,000-strong live audience that hung on every word of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hour-long speech from the fort's ramparts.

After the hot and humid conditions through the week, a cool, breezy morning made it a perfect day to be out for the audience that comprised people from Delhi as well as other states. The invitees, including ministers, former ministers and defence personnel, were in their seats half an hour before the PM arrived at 7.24am to inspect the guard of honour. After unfurling the Tricolour, he started his speech at 7.33am and spoke for more than an hour, till 8.40am.

In a departure from standard practice, there was no bullet-proof enclosure around the Prime Minister but given the size and spread of the gathering, and the security arrangements, many didn't have a clear view of him. However, the speech was heard clearly and the crowd's loud cheers echoed off the fort's walls.

The audience enclosures covering many acres of the fort grounds were packed. Security officials said a little over 26,000 passes were issued for the event and all of them seemed to have been utilized. Several thousand more persons are said to have heard the PM's address from outside the enclosures. With around 10,000 security officials posted inside the fort complex at the time, the live audience is estimated to have been the largest ever on I-Day, officials said.

Usham Rana was one of those who couldn't make it inside. "I started last night from Sonipat but the bus broke down midway. By the time I arrived, police had already shut the gates and I had to listen to the PM from outside," he said.

As in previous years, there were 3,500 student participants this time but the number of participating schools was increased to 42—the highest so far. The children were not too happy about being tied down to a place for two hours but they had some of the best seats in the park.

Jyoti Tripathi, 14, was visibly excited about her first I-Day outing. "It was a great feeling. We had been practising for 15 days and everything went off well. I feel extremely proud to be an Indian," she said. Her school, SSK Khalsa, Daryaganj, has been part of the celebrations for more than five years.

Yogita Sharma, 15, of Government Senior Secondary School, Jama Masjid said, "This is my second year here and it's a festive feeling. The Prime Minister's speech was inspiring. I am a big Modi fan and had long wanted to hear him. My wish has come true".
