Schools use tech, training as shield against road rage

NEW DELHI: Of the more than 1 crore children who commute to school by bus in India, the largest number are in Delhi-NCR, an area notorious for incidents of road rage. However, there is little that schools can do in such cases beyond tracking their buses through the Global Positioning System (GPS), sending along private guards and sensitizing their drivers to avoid confrontations.

Schools say students are soft targets on the road, and weak policing that allows culprits to go unpunished has led to an increase in cases of road rage. Ameeta Mohan, principal, Amity International, Pushp Vihar, says police need to take cognizance of such incidents as "The culprits get away easily".

Rita Sen, principal of Delhi Public School, Rohini is concerned following the recent incidents. "Road rage is happening with everyone and we just don't know how to curb such incidents," said Sen.

Reema Aliwadi, principal, G D Goenka School, Model Town said, "We can't stop road rage as people are getting less tolerant. But we do prepare ourselves by sensitizing students, organizing regular workshops for drivers and providing mobile phones to attendants in buses".

Some schools prefer using DTC buses as their drivers are trained and police-verified. "There is always a book in the bus and one bad remark will go against the driver's record. Moreover, they are better paid than private bus drivers," said Anuradha Joshi, principal of Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, which engages 27 buses.

Schools have also engaged private firms offering safety solutions. Bobbie Kalra, CEO of NorthStar that monitors the buses of 20 schools in Delhi, said, "We have put GPS, tilt sensor (in case the bus tilts more than 35 degrees), impact sensor (in case the bus gets hit or hits something) and six CCTVs in each bus. Even if the school administrator is not monitoring, parents and school authorities get alerts via Android applications on mobiles and tablets. An alert is sent out for anything from a puncture to a child going missing if there is a delay of more than six minutes".
