Indian Museum official’s kin move SC to trace him

NEW DELHI: The case of the mysterious disappearance of Indian Museum official Sunil Upadhyay reached Supreme Court on Thursday with a relative filing a habeas corpus petition requesting an inter-state investigation to trace him.

Upadhyay, the museum's chief conservation officer, is missing since July 3. He was allegedly unhappy about the happenings in the museum and had left his mobile phone at home before going missing.

His contemporaries at Jubilee Hall hostel in Delhi University helped Upadhyay's relative move the petition through advocate Anirudh Sharma. The petitioner did not rule out foul play. "It is an open secret now in public domain that he had raised his voice against corruption and irregularities at Indian Museum for which he has paid a price," the petition says.

There were apprehensions that Upadhyay was courting trouble by acting as a whistleblower and raising inconvenient questions about misuse of public funds, mismanagement and disappearance of artifacts or replacing them with fake ones.

Upadhyay was recently asked by the culture ministry to lead India's efforts to document Swami Vivekananda's speech in Chicago on his 150th birth anniversary.
