NEW DELHI: A trial court has sentenced a man to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment for possessing over 21.5kgs of illegal drugs.

Special NDPS judge Shail Jain awarded the jail term to Saidulla Ansari, a resident of Bihar, and also imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on him after holding him guilty under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

"The convict was found in possession of 21.5kg of charas and is sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 15 years and to pay fine of Rs 1.5 lakh," the court said.

While convicting Ansari, the judge said, "Testimony of prosecution witnesses is consistent. The recovery of controlled substance from the possession of accused is clearly established."

According to the prosecution, police got information that on September 19, 2012, Ansari would be coming towards ISBT, Kashmere Gate to supply charas. A police party caught him carrying two bags of drugs.

The prosecutor had argued that severe punishment should be imposed on Ansari as such kind of offences were on the rise and he was found possessing huge quantity of charas. The counsel for the convict had sought a lenient view on the grounds that he was the sole bread earner and had to support his wife, three kids and parents.
