While an upbeat Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is eyeing a clean sweep after clinching three of the four central panel posts, All India Students' Association (AISA) is looking to open its account in the polls, following an impressive show last year. Meanwhile, the beleaguered National Students' Union of India (NSUI) is banking on Ameet Sidhu Teema, the only Sikh candidate from major students' groups as their trump card.
Caste politics has always been a major factor in DUSU polls, right since it was first held in 1954. On most occasions, the candidates fielded by arch-rivals ABVP and NSUI have been from the Gujjar or Jat community. This year, NSUI and ABVP have fielded two Jat candidates and one Gujjar candidate. While NSUI has fielded Teema for the post of secretary to woo the minority community, ABVP is banking on Kanika Shekawat from the Rajput community. AISA has fielded a female candidate, Madhurima, for the president's post.
Sunny Kumar of AISA said: "This is no longer a fight between ABVP and NSUI, but between ABVP and AISA."
