Demand for power falls after rains

NEW DELHI: Power demand plummeted by nearly 1,000MW with the city experiencing showers daily. A peak demand of 5,000MW was seen till last week, but the showers have given a relief to the government and discoms which have been battling reduced generation from coal and gas-based plants and a prevalent power crisis in the Northern Grid.

Delhi's peak demand on Friday was 4,294MW. Officials said it was not just Delhi but all northern states which faced huge demand in power that was taking a toll on the Grid. Last week, the Northern Regional Load Dispatch Centre (NRLDC) had sent SOS signals to all northern states to curtail their overdrawal. The alert was issued after high power demand caused fluctuations in Grid frequency this week and all states were asked to be on alert.

Delhi is one of the northern region constituents and had been seeing an unusually high power demand in the second fortnight of August, as compared to previous years. Till August, peak demand averaged around 5,500MW which was abnormally high for this time of the year. In addition to the hot and sultry days, the city was also facing a reduced generation of power from coal and gas-based stations.
