NEW DELHI: Motorists in the national capital faced bumper to bumper traffic on several roads on Thursday morning due to the movement of Chinese President XI Jinping, who is in India on a three-day trip.

The traffic police shut down parts of India Gate and the Ring Road for the visit of Xi Jinping to Rajghat and Hyderabad house after that.

The Delhi traffic police in an advisory has urged people to avoid Dhaula Kuan, Sardar Patel Marg and Ashoka Road for hassle-free ride.

To facilitate the safe and smooth movement of the VIP carcade, Sardar Patel Marg shall be closed for intermittent periods, the traffic advisory says adding, the movement of general traffic is likely to be affected on Sardar Patel Marg, Dhaula Kuan and Ashoka Road.

The traffic police have adivsed motorists to make maximum use of public transport system, especially Delhi Metro.

Traffic officials say that though there were alternate routes planned for diversion of traffic the large volume of vehicles led to the snarls.

The situation was such that it took commuters travelling from Connaught Place to Pragati Maidan almost three hours to reach their destination.

"We have deployed additonal forces and taken help from the district police to manage the situation" said a traffic police officer.

Commuters coming from the airport too were stuck after the cops barricaded a part of Sardar Patel marg to prevent Tibetan protesters from reaching the Taj Palace hotel where the Chinese delegations are staying.

With the situation going from bad to worse, a team led by senior police officials from the district also joined in to manage the traffic.

Delhi traffic police advisory for motorists

* Motorists coming on NH-8 from Dwarka / Gurgaon etc. and destined to New Delhi and beyond areas are requested to take Rao Tula Ram Marg - Moti Bagh Crossing - Shanti Path for their journey.

* Motorists headed from New Delhi to Ring Road may take San Martin Marg.

* Motorists going from New Delhi towards NH-8 and vice-versa can also use Upper Ridge Road for journey.

* Motorists moving on Panchsheel Marg and using Sardar Patel Marg may turn left / right on San Martin Marg for road movement.

* Abai Marg, Manas Marg and Battle Honours Mess Marg shall be closed for movement of vehicles. However, vehicles of bonafide residents shall be allowed.

* For other movements of the VVIP, adequate staff shall be deployed on route which shall guide & direct the motorists and effect proper traffic diversions.
