CISF Metro's campus day out

NEW DELHI: Members of the dog squad and quick reaction team of the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) roaming around in a college campus is not a regular sight. And it wasn't a regular day for the students of Miranda House either, when the CISF Metro team paid a visit to demonstrate self-defence tech niques. The dog squad was wandering in the college and the bomb squad's bus was parked in the premises, attracting curious stares from students, who were advised to attend the demonstration if they didn't have a class to attend at that time.

In a packed auditorium, the CISF Metro showed how their dog and bomb squads work. Ankit Dubey, assistant commandant, CISF , Delhi Zone, explained the techniques of self-defence — holding the joints, using the body momentum, etc. But it was the cute pooches from the dog squad who made the ambience livelier, with the girls cheering for them and recording their antics on camera. Each time a dog would obey the command of his trainer — like salami de, uth, baith — the hall would reverberate with 'awws'.

The CISF Metro had earlier conducted the self-defence demonstration in IP College too. Arvind Ranjan, director general, CISF, said, "We organised a self-defence demonstration in the two girls' colleges with an aim to inspire the students. The demonstration will not only help the girls understand their capability, but will also tell them what should be done in case of distress. It will prepare the girls to deal with unwanted situations on the road."

Pratibha Jolly, principal, Miranda House, was appreciative of the CISF's demonstration. She said it was not only a demonstration but also a lesson for the girls to remember. She said, "The CISF Metro's women commandos were inspiring. I enjoyed the session where the dog squad demonstrated their skills. After this demonstration, I am sure, the girls now know what will happen if they leave their stuff unattended. It was good to know how a casual attitude can lead to dangerous situations."

Bomb squad

While demonstrating what happens when CISF Metro personnel find an unattended bag, they said the bomb squad does an inspection of the bag with the explosive vapour device and a non-linear junction detector. A bomb suit weighs 30kg and the helmet weighs 15kg. Ankit Dubey said, "An unattended bag might be a small thing for you people, but it is a huge deal for us"

Self-defence demonstration

From how frisking is done at a Metro station to how to tackle a street fight, this self-defence demonstration by CISF Metro showed some interesting techniques. Apart from being alert on the road, this demonstration also explained how to use the body's joints to tackle a situation. From attacking at the elbow, wrist, shoulder or fingers, every step has to be manipulated in self defence

Dog squad

Applause for the dog squad's demonstration was unending. The entire auditorium stood up to cheer for the pooches. Obeying the command of his trainer, one the dogs sat, stood up, rolled to the right and left, and gave salami too. But Dubey said, "The real job of the dog is not to roll on the floor but to sniff and find explosives. Since we couldn't bring explosives here, we just showed how the dog squad obeys commands."
