Najafgarh Road: Here planners left no space for hapless pedestrians

NEW DELHI: Najafgarh Road is one of the prime examples where government agencies have failed to implement urban road design norms. While better infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists on roads with mass transit system, such as the Metro, is recommended as per norms, it is altogether lacking in the crucial link that connects urban west Delhi with rural Najafgarh.

Despite Metro connectivity, traffic jams are common and pedestrians have no place to walk along this road. The pavements are either missing or have been encroached upon by hawkers. At many places, pavements are extremely narrow. In places where Metro pillars have been constructed on one side of the road, there is no space for pedestrians.

"Due to lack of footpaths, people have to walk on the main road. Most people prefer to either use private vehicles or hire a cycle-rickshaw even for short distances as it is not safe to be on foot here," said Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Rajouri Garden.

From streetfood vendors to fruit sellers, hawkers have eaten up the entire space meant for pedestrians on both sides of Uttam Nagar Metro station. Those coming out of the station have to walk on the main road. Similarly , near Tilak Nagar Metro station, people have setup makeshift shops on the pavements.

With the festival season round the corner, effigymakers have also set up their workshops on pavements near Rajouri Garden. On the entire stretch between Rajouri Garden and Tilak Nagar, there is no space to walk. But police and PWD are both not bothered. These effigymakers are busy giving final touches to their pieces of art, while resident risk their lives by walking on roads.

Even as people continue to suffer, police and civic agencies are busy passing the buck. First, the planning agencies did create proper infrastructure for pedestrians, and now enforcement agencies are not doing anything to protect whatever facilities are available.
