Cops to launch driver verification system

NEW DELHI: If you plan to hire a driver but would like to know if your car would be safe in his hands, help is on the way. Delhi traffic police has proposed a driver verification system to check on the road credentials of a prospective driver.

Under the plan, cops will issue an employability certificate to a driver after checking his licence and the number of challans issued to him, as well as other details such as multiple licences held by the person.

"We have discussed the implementation of the system. We already maintain a record of drivers which shows the real-time violations committed by each of them in the past year which we will use," said Muktesh Chander, special commissioner, traffic.

The plan is being studied at the highest level. Cops hope to roll it out within two months.

Employers seeking to verify the credentials of a driver would have to download an application form from the Delhi Police website and fill in details such as the driver's licence number, experience etc.

The traffic cops would then run a check on the number of challans issued against the person and violations registered against him such as drunken or negligent driving. These details will be shared with the employer along with a recommendation on whether or not the person is fit for driving, a traffic police officer said. It would then be up to the employer to hire the person.

"We would also find out whether the driver was involved in serious offences and booked outside the city and share the details," said a senior officer. Eventually, the traffic police will share the data with the insurance companies which will consider the background of the driver while paying compensation in case of an accident, police officials said.

He said that the idea was mooted after Delhi cops were successful in collecting data on household helps through similar verification forms. The cops have also planned to use a similar system for drivers seeking third party insurance for commercial vehicles.

Officials said the idea is to deter drivers who have been booked more than once for serious offences, from driving a vehicle or getting employed as a driver.

The traffic cops have also suggested to the Union transport ministry to have a common online database for all driving license holders so that no driver holding a license from another state manages to get a driving job in the city without verification.
