Bhavnish Kumar, the engineer, overtook and forced the robbers to stop when they tried getting away in an autorickshaw after robbing a man near the Defence Colony flyover, police said.
Kumar had given a lift to a man to the flyover when four robbers surrounded the man and robbed him. When Kumar tried to intervene, the men threatened him with dire consequences.
Trying to flee, they stopped an autorickshaw and held the driver at knife point. They took his belongings and asked him to drive fast. Two of them sat beside the auto driver while two others sat at the back. Now, Kumar decided to give them a chase. He found two cops on patrol duty and told them about the incident. He offered to give them a lift and aide in the chase.
"I started driving fast and found the autorickshaw. I pulled up beside the auto and the cops signaled it to stop but the driver started speeding. We saw that he was held at knifepoint and decided to intercept the three-wheeler," said Kumar.
The robbers made the auto driver drive in and out of the lane, obstructing the car. "I was worried about the safety of the auto driver and decided to overtake them and block their way," said Kumar.
The policemen informed their counterparts in the area who set up barricades near the Chirag Delhi crossing. The autorickshaw was finally forced to stop there. The two sitting beside the auto driver got off and fled while the other two were caught, police said.
Later, the other two were also caught after a raid. The men were identified as Ashish, Neeraj and Ashish Chowdhary, all in their 20s and residents of Madangir area. A case of robbery under section 394 was registered against them. The juvenile was produced before a juvenile justice board and sent to a correctional home.
