Area councillor Virender Kasana said that South Corporation commissioner visited the area last week to oversee a sanitation drive. "But now the roads are dug up and there is no way that these roads can be restored before Durga Puja starts. Rather than making the area cleaner, it's reduced to a dustbowl."
South Corporation, in a letter to the private telecom company, had instructed that pits have to be filled immediately. However, Kasana said that this wasn't done and more stretches are now taken up. "Already roads are narrow and during puja celebrations, there is hardly any space for pedestrians. Road digging permission could've been given later. Moreover, it isn't allowed till September 30." Officials said that road restoration takes at least a month as tenders are floated before work is awarded.
The private telecom company had approached the corporation earlier in February but wasn't allowed to start work then. The corporation agreed on a September 4 date and digging started only on Saturday. Residents are now a worried lot. "It gets very crowded during the pujas and now with this road digging, it will get worse. This work easily could be taken up after the puja celebrations were over. It is such mindless planning," said Minati Chakraborty, a resident of the area.
Roads in blocks A, B, J, I and G are dug up and these optical cables that are being laid are for 4G connection.
