DU victory raises BJP's assembly election hopes

NEW DELHI: BJP's city office burst into celebrations on Saturday with ABVP winning all four key posts in the DUSU polls. The victory also seemed to have boosted the morale of the party's Delhi unit. "We will win the assembly elections too, if it were to be held again, with huge margins," claimed south Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri, who was also in charge of the DU elections.

In a tweet, BJP president Amit Shah credited students and ABVP workers for the victory. However, almost everyone present at the Delhi party office took it as a sign of PM Modi's popularity. "We thank the students of DU for their unprecedented support to ABVP after 17 years. This tremendous victory is the result of the magic of the personality of PM Narendra Modi," said Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay. "It may be recalled that when Modi was addressing the students of a DU college last year, the entire atmosphere had become Modi-fied," he added.

Bidhuri said ABVP won mainly because of Modi's popularity, his efforts to create employment for the youth and the HRD ministry's quick decision to scrap the four-year undergraduate programme.

BJP secretary Shrikant Sharma termed ABVP's stunning victory a result of BJP's "positive approach". This indicates that youths of the country are in favour of the policies adopted by BJP, he added.
