NEW DELHI: The 35-year-old man who was stabbed by three robbers in Mayur Vihar had to be admitted to the ICU of a hospital in Noida even after he was discharged from a private hospital. Even so, only a case of robbery has been registered by police.

On the night of September 10, the victim, Rajesh Pillai, was attacked while he was walking to his house from a market. Three men on a black motorcycle intercepted him; one of the pillion riders pulled at his gold chain. He got into a scuffle and dragged down the snatcher, who took out a knife and slashed his arm. He also stabbed him in the abdomen, leaving him critically injured.

His family members said he was rushed to a local private hospital from where he was discharged after treatment. Later, he had to be rushed to a private hospital in Noida. "Doctors said he had injured his spleen and is in a serious condition," said Subodh Nair, Pillai's brother-in-law.

He said the robbers had first hit the victim on the head with a helmet and stabbed him when he fell. "The entire episode was witnessed by a few people sitting within a couple of metres from his house at Pocket 4 in Mayur Vihar Phase I but they did not extend any help," said Nair.

Though Pillai could not record the registration number of the bike, he told the cops that all three men were well-built and were in the age-group of 25 to 30. He said none of the attackers was wearing a helmet. Pillai said it was a cop who took him to hospital; his wife and uncle were informed later.

Senior cops said a case was registered based on the statement given by the man. They said that a case of attempt to murder will be registered once the motive is clear. They said that efforts are on to nab the unknown accused. Locals are being questioned.

Meanwhile, residents staged a protest along with the local councillor and MLA, demanding that a case of attempt to murder also be registered. "We, along with local leaders Sandhya Verma and Nakul Bhardwaj, met senior cops as most residents are terrified by this incident," said Nair.
