NEW DELHI: Seventeen enthusiastic participants have set off on the first Times Passion Trail, a cycling expedition from Manali to Leh. It will be a test of their fitness as well as passion.

An architect, a teacher, and an actor - cycling and fitness enthusiasts from all walks of life came together to take part in Times Passions Trail, a unique travel experience organized by Times of India in collaboration with Yatra. In this journey, 17 participants will be led through the dizzying heights and awe-inspiring landscapes between Manali and Leh by Rajesh Kalra, an experience architect and chief editor of Times Internet. The 475-km distance will be covered in a span of nine days.

Fifteen male and two female participants have signed up for the trip. The event was flagged off on Saturday at the Indian Mountaineering Federation by MP Meenakshi Lekhi and Santosh Yadav, the first woman in the world to climb Mount Everest twice and the first woman to successfully climb Mt Everest from Kangshung Face.

Rahul Kansal, executive president for Times Group, said the cycling expedition was aimed at connecting with readers beyond the realm of news. "At Times Group, we try to see ourselves as more than reporters of news and want to be partners in progress. TOI would like readers to indulge their pas sion and this cycling expedition will do that,'' he said.

Participants will be reaching Manali on Sunday and the cycling expedition will begin on Monday . The group will be staying in camps throughout their journey through Manali, Marhi, Rohtang Pass, Keylong, Patseo, Baralacha la, Gata Loops and Sindhu Ghat before it ends in Leh on September 16.

The Manali-Leh cycling expedition will test the limits of participants' fitness because it runs through the highest long distance road in the world. "Cycling is becoming big and cycling in the highest long distance road in the world cannot be done unless you do it with a passion. We selected participants who claim that they have this passion and we will see actualize that passion. My intention would be make sure everyone can deliver at the end,'' said Kalra.

Lekhi said she was envious of the participants because she did not get enough time to pursue her love for cycling. Climber Santosh Kumar said participants would come back changed by the experience. "When you spend so many days close to nature, with nothing but the beauty of the hills and trees around you, you come back with a much more strong sense of ownership of yourself,'' she said.

Gurleen Kaur is one of the two female participants and attributes her participation to a "spur of the moment"decision. "I'm into various forms of fitness like karate, running and even cycling but this is the first time I have taken up a challenge like this. It's going to be the experience of a lifetime for me,'' she said enthusiastically .

Amit Jindal, another participant, took two weeks off from his job for the expedition. "Cycling is a passion for me and this is going to be a great experience. My two daughters are also extremely excited about the trip,'' he said. IT professional Dhiraj Malhotra said that he lost over 20 kg in a year just by cycling and diet control."Now I just want to maintain this routine and this passion trail is great way to continue my love for cycling,'' he said.

Actor Praveen Dabas, known for films like Monsoon Wedding, Khosla ka Ghosla and My name is Khan, is also one of the participants. "My mantra is to just do it. The maximum I have cycled is 80km in a day and this is my chance to really push myself. The altitude will be tough as you cycle uphill,'' he said.
