Shops steal Naraina walkways

NEW DELHI: The construction of Naraina Flyover may have decongested Ring Road but residents of the area still have to battle heavy traffic. Though the project has taken considerable load off the road underneath, it hasn't freed up space for pedestrians.

Shopkeepers have encroached upon the pavements on both sides of the road. Public Works Department had spent crores on relaying the pavements, which are being used by steel and aluminum fabricators, car mechanics, carpenters as workshop, or by shopkeepers to stack goods. The pavements on the stretch between Naraina and Rajouri Garden flyovers have almost no room left. Pedestrians have to walk gingerly on the edge while vehicles zip past on the main road.

Locals say they have grown accustomed to the roaring traffic. "We have stopped bothering now. Chances of getting hurt are actually more while walking on these pavements than on the carriageways. Most shopowners have taken over the pavements," says Shallu, a resident of Naraina Cantt Board on one side of the main road-it is managed by the Delhi Cantonment Board. On the other side of the main road is the Naraina village. From sweet shops to apparel showrooms, every commercial establishment has spread itself till the pavement. "This road used to be jammed earlier. Now, the pavements are cluttered,'' said Charu Sharma, a resident of Naraina village.

While building the flyover, PWD had carved out parking space under the flyover. Even that didn't make space for pedestrians. The pavements, residents say, should have been widened after the flyover was constructed. "Both the residential areas depend on this market for daily needs. Women and children have to negotiate heavy traffic, putting themselves at risk," says Surender Singh, a villager.

PWD officials say they have asked the municipal corporation several times to remove the encroachments. "We don't have the resources to act against the encroachers. All we can do is inform the district taskforce," said an official. Lack of maintenance is another pressing issue. Open manholes, overflowing dustbins and wires hanging loose are some of the problems that need immediate attention. "We have made several complaints to PWD for covering the manhole outside our house. The sewer overflows whenever it rains. We are yet to get a response," says another villager.
