Woman, son murdered in Rohini flat

NEW DELHI: A 62-year-old woman and her 40-year-old son were found murdered in their house in Rohini, northwest Delhi, on Friday. The two had been bludgeoned to death with a hammer and stabbed multiple times as well, police said.

The woman, Usha Mishra, a widow, stayed with her son, Jitender, who was a widower and differently-abled. Police suspect the two were killed for their property, but they are also investigating if the motive was robbery or to settle old scores. The house looked like it had been ransacked, police added.

The family had been struck by misfortune earlier. In 2008, Usha's husband Narender Mishra had passed away. Then in 2012, her daughter-in-law Pratima died under mysterious circumstances. Only four daughters remain in the family and all of them are married and stay in different parts of the city.

After Pratima's death, the mother-son duo had been staying in a two-room flat on the second floor of the house (number 146) and had rented out the rest of the floor to two other families. The rent and their savings were the only visible sources of income they had.

The murder was discovered by a neighbour, Manorama, around 11am on Friday when she came to check why the Mishras had been running their TV on full volume. She told police that she had seen around 6.30am that the door had been left ajar and lights were on, but didn't bother to check. The door was still open when she came. When she went inside, she shrieked, came out and alerted other neighbours.

The neighbours said they found Usha lying in a pool of blood on the bed with injuries to her face and head; Jitender was found in another room, lying on the floor with injuries to his face and arms. Police were informed around 11.30am.

A team from the nearby Vijay Vihar police station reached the spot and took the bodies for postmortem. A crime and forensic team was also called in to collect fingerprints and other samples. Police found a hammer and a nail from the staircase of the building and suspect the former to be the murder weapon.

A wallet containing a photo identity card purportedly issued by a Rohini court and bearing the name of Jitendra Kumar was also found in the room. The family members claimed they did not know this person.

Police suspect there was more than one assailant and they were known to the victims. They had come to the house after 9.30pm on Thursday as Usha was last seen around that time, returning home from the market. Police also recovered two glasses kept on the table, which they believe are signs that the "guests" were offered water.

The bed on which Usha's body was found displaced. Police said it appeared that somebody had tried to take out something from under it or behind it. But police also said that it was possible that the killers deliberately ransacked the house to make it appear as a robbery bid and mislead investigators.

All family members including, the kin of Pratima, are being examined. Pratima's family members allegedly had a quarrel with Usha and Jitender two days earlier.

The crime branch has also been roped in to crack the case. "We have registered a case of murder and are waiting for the autopsy and forensic reports. We expect a breakthrough soon," said DCP (outer) Vikramjit Singh.
