NEW DELHI: How do you teach a class of children who learn through trial and error, multitask habitually, like 'control over exploration' and have attention spans of six to eight minutes? Technology has changed the learning—and teaching—experience and, on Tuesday, a group of techies and educationists gathered at Vasant Valley School to discuss how technology may be harnessed to improve learning outcomes. Learn Today's summit on education technology for school heads—'Leading Change in Changing Times'—is being held over October 7 and 8.

Shradha Kanwar, studying education technology at NIIT University, points out that the current generation of teachers doesn't even know the kind of employment they are preparing their students for. Vijay Mandke, professor at the same university, observes that the only way to attract and hold the attending of kids at home with technology is to "produce new information and process it in a new way".

The first round went to technology but, as subsequent panelists and Nitya Ram of Universal Learn Today pointed out, "It is important for educationists to know what technology is available and what we need." Right decision-making is crucial for "digital leaders"—tech interventions are generally unpopular with the staff and regarded as impositions, mistakes are generally expensive and there are so many options backed by heavy-duty marketing school authorities are easily confused. One participating teacher recalled buying content that they later discovered was riddled with errors. "How do you select content? The marketing people show us the best parts but when we take class we find errors. We give them the feedback and they correct it but these guys are actually learning at our expense," she said.

"You need a system you can use, create and share content by yourself. Not one with content locked in," suggested Amit Kaushik, education and skills development, IPE Global Pvt Limited. He also pointed out that technology isn't just for content but may be used only for administrative functions and to improve teaching.
