NEW DELHI: Barely a fortnight after the Centre shifted out finance secretary Arvind Mayaram as tourism secretary, he has been shunted yet again, this time to the post of secretary, minority affairs.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday canceled its October 16 order appointing Mayaram, an IAS officer of 1978 batch belonging to Rajasthan cadre, as secretary, ministry of tourism. He has now been named as secretary, ministry of minority affairs, upon incumbent Lalit K Panwar, a 1979 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, relinquishing charge of the post.
Panwar will move out as secretary, tourism, in the vacancy of Parvez Dewan, a Jammu & Kashmir cadre IAS officer of 1977 batch. Dewan is due to retire at the end of this month.

Meanwhile, Ratan P Watal, secretary, expenditure, in the finance ministry, will hold additional charge as secretary, department of economic affairs, until Rajiv Mehrishi, appointed to the key post on October 16, assumes charge. Mehrishi, as chief secretary of Rajasthan, has been known for his pro-reforms approach.
According to the ACC order issued on Thursday, Watal has been assigned additional charge of the post of secretary, department of economic affairs, for a period of one month with immediate effect or until the assumption of charge of the post by Mehrishi, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Mehrishi was brought in place of Mayaram, a UPA government appointee, a fortnight back as part of the first major shuffle of top civil servants since PM Modi took office on May 26. The reshuffle in the finance ministry came ahead of start of the budget preparation exercise.
