NEW DELHI: Delhi has been put on high alert in the wake of intelligence inputs of a possible terror strike on Dussehra. Security has been beefed up for October 3 and 4, especially in the north Delhi area which the Prime Minister will visit.

The intelligence sleuths and the police, including the special cell, will keep a hawk eye vigil at 16 places where effigies are to be burnt and a watch on the processions which, the input says, can also be targeted.

The areas where security has been beefed up are Ramlila Maidan, Red Fort ground, Subash Maidan, Dangal Maidan, Sultanpuri, Ashok Vihar, PU Block Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh, Qutub School ground in Mehrauli among others.

Around 30,000 police personnel, including paramilitary forces, will be placed at strategic locations. As many as 20 companies of Delhi Police from reserved battalions and 18 companies of paramilitary forces will be guarding the Dussehra grounds, markets, railway stations and bus stands.

Earlier this month, the spe cial cell of Delhi Police had arrested one Ajaz Sheikh from Saharanpur, who allegedly had been tasked to come to the city and supply logistics to some operatives for carrying out a strike during the festive season. The police are being cautious due to this as well. Senior police officers have been asked to maintain vigil in the central and north district during the next two days.CCTV cameras have been installed at all the Dussehra venues. Delhi Police and the PM's security unit have drawn out a multilayer security plan for Narendra Modi's security during his visit to the Ramlila venue. All the adjoining areas will be sanitized by Thursday night.

Snipers and Swat teams of special cell will also be positioned strategically , police said. Senior intelligence officers say that Modi faces greatest threat than any other head of the state in the past two decades. Sources say that while Modi is on the move, no vehicle will be allowed to run within at least one kilometer from his cavalcade. The houses near Red Fort and other central Delhi areas would have sharpshooters and spotters to keep an eye on people when Modi is burning the effigy.

The cops have intensified their anti-sabotage and anti-explosive checks. They have also kept an eye on all ammonium nitrate sellers in the city and are gathering inputs about any movements in sleeper cells.

Areas like Connaught Place, Tilak Marg, India Gate and Parliament Street will get maximum security . Security has been beefed up in Sadar Bazar, Chandni Chowk and Sarojini Nagar as well, police said.
