Giant wheel a monumental treat

NEW DELHI: The biggest ferris-wheel ride opened up in India on Thursday. 'Delhi Eye' which has its name and its setting inspired by the fourth largest such ride in the world, the 'London Eye', was launched at Kalindi Kunj park. The ride which is slightly over 40 meters in diameter and raised on platform to give it extra elevation is about 45 meters at its highest point. From here, promoters of Delhi eye claim, 'one could see monuments like Qutub Minar, Red Fort, Akshardham temple, Lotus Temple and Humayun's Tomb'.

A ride on top of the wheel, which moves at a slow speed to not startle the inmates of around three dozen hanging cubicles, the searching gaze does not really go as far. Perhaps for the levels of pollution or the direct sunlight rising from the direction where most of these monuments lay, these monuments couldn't be seen. What one could observe, though, was the far reaching river Yamuna, on whose banks this ride has been installed.

Sayed Salim, managing director of Izara entertainment pvt ltd. that has built the ride, said that they were inspired by the setting of the London Eye and wanted to recreate the experience for India. "Most of the giant ferris wheels in the world like the ride in Singapore, London or at Niagra are located at water-fronts, which provide a great spectacle to the riders. So we decided to put this wheel on the banks of Yamuna." Salim, who was also part of the team that designed the London Eye, says he has begun to receive inquiries about the ferris wheels around India.

While putting up rides as big as the one installed in London may not be feasible in India, Salim comments, the Delhi Eye model, which officially is referred to as 'R50', can be installed at various places across the country.

Visitors to the ride were seen buying tickets well before the official launch to the ride. Each cabin in the ride is air-conditioned and is enclosed in a dark tinted glass, to prevent direct sunlight from entering the cabin. For the first 15 days from its launch tickets have been priced at a discounted rate of Rs 250, after which the ride will cost Rs 300 for each passenger.

The ferris wheel was scheduled to open about three years ago when issues were raised about its proximity to the Yamuna river, around which any construction within 300 meters, was prohibited.

Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan had reportedly been invited to open the proceedings when a Supreme Court monitoring committee put a stop to Delhi Eye.
