Ministries face off on rapid rail corridor route

NEW DELHI: Road transport ministry and urban development ministry are at loggerheads on the issue of fixing alignment of Rapid Rail corridor between Delhi and Meerut.

After the face off between the two ministries, UD secretary Shankar Aggarwal has now sought intervention of Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth to resolve the issue so that the project preparation can be expedited. Sources said that while the consultant appointed for the Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) had prepared the detailed report of building the elevated corridor between Anand Vihar and Meerut on the median of NH-58, the road transport ministry has objected to this alignment.

Top road transport ministry officials said that since there is no scope of widening or expanding the existing highway stretch, they have to build an elevated road to deal with the traffic growth. "We even offered to the Uttar Pradesh government to take the road from us and manage it as they wish," one of them said.

While transport ministry officials said that they never gave go ahead to the proposal of RRTC corridor on central verge, UD ministry official said, "Only after we were assured that the elevated corridor can be built on the median, the consultant prepared the report. But now they say this cannot be done as the ministry has plans for expansion of this congested stretch. Despite our submission that we need to block only three meters at the central verge for construction, the ministry claims that the blockade will be for 10 meters."

He added that now they have no option than taking it at the highest level. Sources said that Uttar Pradesh government has now suggested alternate alignment for the high speed urban rail corridor. But UD ministry officials said that changing alignment and preparing a new report would not only cost more but it will also delay the project.

The stretch of RRTS between Delhi and Meerut is about 97 km and it will have 17 stations.
