The declaration comes a day after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal demanded Rs 1 crore assistance for Jagbir's family. He had also sought employment for one member of the family on compassionate grounds.
Incidentally, the Rs 1-crore ex-gratia relief for Jagbir's kin equals the compensation Kejriwal had granted to a Delhi Police constable killed during his 49-day tenure as Delhi chief minister. He had pledged Rs 1 crore, one of the highest compensation ever awarded to kin of a policeman killed on duty, to the next of kin of the constable who was beaten to death by suspected liquor mafia.
Union home ministry officials on Wednesday conceded that Rs 1-crore ex gratia extended to Jagbir's kin was way higher than what the family of a CRPF personnel killed in action, gets on a usual basis. The highest compensation awarded to a CRPF jawan killed in a counter-Naxal operation or during an internal security assignment is Rs 60 lakh, nearly 40 lakh less than what the Delhi Police constable's kin will be getting.
Jung's declaration of ex-gratia for the slain constable comes a day after Union home minister discussed the security and safety of Delhi Police personnel at a review meeting with the LG and Delhi Police commissioner B S Bassi.
Singh is said to have expressed concern over attacks on police personnel doing their duty, and sought tackling of criminal gangs behind such attacks. According to Bassi, directions have been given to all police stations to sensitise the policemen on how to deal with criminal gangs and impart them training on how to react to any such situation. "The home minister has assured all help to the Delhi police in this regard," Bassi was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, a statement issued on by the LG's office on Wednesday read: "I pay tribute to the departed soul, who laid down his life, while serving our nation. May his family bear the loss with strength and fortitude".
