They drove to Mathura and jumped before Intercity Express

NEW DELHI: In what appears to be a suicide pact, a lecturer at the Rohini-based National Institute of Criminology & Forensic Science, along with his wife and three-year-old daughter, drove all the way to Mathura and then jumped in front of a train on Wednesday. While the couple died on the spot, the child had a miraculous escape.

Police said the lecturer, Sankalp Anand, parked his car near the Delhi-Agra railway tracks in the Kosikalan area of Mathura before taking the extreme step. His wife Nandini Anand was a homemaker. Their daughter, Ridhima, suffered severe head injuries and is under observation at a hospital. The doctors said there were fair chances of her survival.

Anand left an 11-page suicide note in the car accusing some people, including a few officials of the institute, of being responsible for his death, the police said. He alleged that these people had implicated him in false cases. The institute he worked for comes under the ministry of home affairs.

The police have initiated inquest proceedings into the matter and said they would register an FIR of abetment only after a preliminary inquiry into the allegations was carried out.

The incident took place around 11.30pm. Giriraj, a railway employee and an eyewitness, said that he saw a red-colour car stopping near the tracks and a couple getting down along with a child. "The woman carried the child with her. I even yelled at them and asked why they had stopped the car so close to the tracks. However, they seemed reluctant to answer and were talking to each other," he said.

Before Giriraj and others could understand the situation, the couple jumped in front of the Delhi-Agra Intercity Express, which was approaching at a high speed. Locals, along with the police, rushed to the spot and found the girl alive but she was bleeding profusely. The bodies of the couple were mutilated. The girl was rushed to a private hospital where she was undergoing treatment in the ICU.

The doctors said that the child perhaps got thrown off from the woman's hand as she jumped and did not get hit by the train. Her injuries could be the result of her falling on the ground, doctors told the police.

The police have recovered some money, a bank passbook and other documents from the car. The "note" will be sent for handwriting analysis and the allegations are being looked into, the police said.
