Zero tolerance for racial attacks: Centre tells African envoys

NEW DELHI: The foreign ministry on Thursday assured African envoys of "zero tolerance'' against crimes aimed at any particular nationality after it received a communication from the envoys of Gabon and Burkina Faso seeking an impartial probe into attacks on students from these countries.

The students were beaten up by a mob earlier this week at Rajiv Chowk Metro station in the presence of Delhi Police in what many have described as a racist attack. The mob claimed the African students had harassed a woman without backing it with evidence.

MEA on Thursday received a communication from the envoys asking the government to ensure fair and speedy investigation into the matter. "We got a letter today and we are in diplomatic communication with them over the issue,'' foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said.

"We have assured them that ties with Africa are of highest priority for us and that there is zero tolerance in India for any action that targets our friends from Africa,'' he added. The ministry, though, conveyed to the envoys that it may be a good idea to await the outcome of the investigation so as to allow the facts to be established.

Three students, identified as Mapaga (22) and Yohan (22) from Gabon and Guira (20) from Burkina Faso, suffered injuries on their head and legs on Sunday when an angry crowd thrashed them after the trio allegedly molested a woman commuter who raised an alarm. The police, however, said they had not received any complaint in this regard from any woman.

Video footage of the incident, which has since then gone viral on social networking sites, showed a large crowd cornering the three youth at a Delhi Police booth where they were beaten up with security personnel nowhere to be seen.

In January this year, the ministry had invited all African envoys for a meeting to assure them of action against those targeting African nationals in the wake of attacks on Ugandan nationals.
