Raavan comes with a built-in raincoat this year

NEW DELHI: Last year, the unusual October rain dampened the Dussehra spirit, as many effigies of Raavan, Kumbhakarana and Meghanada, at several Ramlila grounds in the city got damaged a day before they were to be burnt. However, the effigy makers have learnt their lesson from the sudden downpour, and this year, they are ready with waterproof effigies!

Incurred losses, but this time playing safe

The artistes from Titarpur in west Delhi, where a majority of these effigies are made, told us that the effigies were almost ready to be delivered, and in fact, at some grounds, they were even erected and ready, when it rained and the demon king got drenched. Subhash, an effigy maker, said, "We had covered the effigies with tarpaulin, but it was too late, and some of the effigies got badly damaged. We incurred huge losses."

Another artiste Mahendra said, "The colour washed away and we were left effigies with ugly patches and torn paper. The buyers would not accept them. The rains affected our business in a big way. We had finished the orders on time, but we had to work overtime to repair some of the effigies. The smaller effigies were completely ruined, but we managed to salvage the bigger ones."

"This year we have taken all the measures to save the effigies from rain and we are confident that nothing could dampen the spirit of Raavan dehan, but badalon ka kuch pata nahin, kab baarish ho jaye, kya malum," Rajendra, an effigy maker said. Talking about the preventive measures, Subhash, told us, "We have three-four charpais (cots) ready to prevent the effigies from getting wet and we also have a waterproof tent ready."

Waterproof Raavans

The effigy makers have used cellophane paper to create waterproof effigies this time. Subhash said, "This year we have used cellophane as well as imported paper to make effigies, so that they can withstand rain."

Waterproof, but not expensive

Cellophane and glossy papers are costlier than the regular sheets, but it makes little difference, say the effigy makers.

Mahendra adds, "I have decorated Raavan with glossy and even imported paper, but I don't charge my customers extra because the competition is already stiff."
