PIL in HC on law course derecognition

NEW DELHI: The row between Delhi University and Bar Council of India (BCI) over derecognition of law courses reached Delhi high court by way of a PIL on Wednesday.

A division bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice R S Endlaw issued notice seeking a response from BCI and the Bar Council of Delhi on the PIL which challenges the move to debar fresh DU law graduates from enrolling as lawyers.

Giving the statutory bodies time till November 5, HC acted on a PIL filed by Vijay Kumar Chaurasia, assistant professor at Law Centre-II in the Faculty of Law, DU. The academician argued before court that law students, who took admission in 2011 and graduated in 2014 from DU's Law Centres, have "wrongfully and illegally" been denied enrollment as advocates.

On September 22, BCI ordered all state bar councils not to enroll students who passed out from the three centres of DU because the Law Faculty failed to obtain "extension of approval of affiliation" from BCI.
