Delhi BRT maintenance handed over to PWD, enforcement to traffic police

NEW DELHI: Days after the Delhi police commissioner wrote to lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung to scrap the BRT corridor, Jung instructed the transport department to hand over maintenance of the corridor to the public works department (PWD) and enforcement to the traffic police.

The previous agency, DIMTS, has been thrown out, sources said.

Earlier this month, in a letter to the Delhi lieutenant governor, the police commissioner had asked for the BRT to be scrapped, citing traffic problems arising out of the corridor.

The BRT, which was implemented in 2008 from Amdedkar Nagar to Lajpat Nagar, has been embroiled in controversies since its inception. The latest order comes after a lot of criticism of the implementing agency DIMTS.

The police commissioner's stand is no surprise considering that the traffic police have openly opposed discontinuation of the project for long. Objections of traffic cops include the fact that BRT has a signaling system not in sync with the main carriageway. Also, bus stops in the middle of the road increase the risk of pedestrian casualties. Police say the BRT layout leaves little lane space for maneuvering heavy traffic which results in snarls. There is no merging distance for buses after they move out of the central lane onto the open road just before Defence Colony flyover. This increases the possibility of accidents.

In 2013, former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit had admitted that BRT was a mistake and that it would be dismantled if her party came to power. Later, the AAP government had made the scrapping of BRT part of its election manifesto. In fact, in February this year, former CM Arvind Kejriwal had said that his government would look into scrapping the corridor, which is operational in only 5.8km, from Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand.
