20 fire engines were rushed to the spot which brought the fire under control. The operations are still on to douse any stray flames, police said.
Fire officials said that the blaze is suspected to have been caused from a short circuit but are yet to confirm the exact cause.
Preliminary investigations suggest that none of the employee working at the godown was injured, but the cops are waiting for the fire to be doused fully.
Police said that there were only a handful of employees who were present at the godown when the incident happened. They said that a lot of inflammable material including linen were stored in the building which led to the massive blaze.
A fire official said that the fire had begun somewhere in the basement of the building and spread to the ground and first floor of the 400 square feet area. The incident was reported around 3.30pm when the fire alarms in the building went off.
Godown officials immediately informed the fire department but the firemen could not reach the spot due to massive traffic jam. They said that the employees who were present in the godown came out through a fire exit doors. Police and security personnel from the bank cordoned off the area which also had other offices in the adjacent buildings. Meanwhile, a major part of the Aurobindo Chowk and Mehrauli Badarpur road was choked in the evening due to the fire as curiously onlookers stopped to take a look.
Clarification:
TOI Online had earlier sent a push notification for TOI mobile app users saying a Tata Motors godown caught fire. Tata Motors has denied it.
