A delegation, comprising of members of Christian community and social activists, are now on their way to meet the Delhi LG to press for a timely renovation of the church. Regulars to St. Sebastian are worried about the renovation work not being completed before Christmas.
The church was gutted under mysterious circumstances.
Referring to the incident, Trinamool parliamentarian Derek O'Brien, who attended the protest outside the police headquarters, tweeted, "Horrified. Angry. Saddened with news of Delhi church burnt/destroyed...Other incidents in MP/Chatgh/Ktka too of Christians being terrorized (sic)." He plans to raise this issue in Parliament on Tuesday
The fire was noticed at the site by the church's watchman, at 6:30am on Monday. He immediately informed the parish priest Father Anthony. Churchgoers to St. Sebastian maintain that the church was deliberately set on fire and that it was not an accidental fire caused by short-circuit. Eyewitnesses, who saw the church in flames, say that there was an overwhelming smell of kerosene from the church hours after the fire had been doused.
Saint Sebastian's Church was built in 2001, in Tahirpur area of Dilshad Garden, and was frequented by Syro Malabar community from across the capital and beyond. Around 1500 Christian families live in the nearby area.
