SIT gets two mths to probe church fire

NEW DELHI: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a joint commissioner of police has been constituted to probe the fire that gutted St Sebastian's church in east Delhi on Monday, home minister Rajnath Singh informed Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a three-member fact finding team of a civil rights NGO, Janhastakshep, found kerosene cans at the church. The NGO came out with a report on Wednesday saying the fire was caused by miscreants and not due to a short circuit.

"The fire was caused in a way that all valuables, including the statue of Mother Mary, the altar, the cross and the Bible and religious books were burnt. It is clear that the targets were selected," the NGO's report said. It went on to say that while the balcony of the prayer room was reduced to ashes, there were no traces of fire on the stairs leading to it.

The NGO has demanded a judicial probe into the incident and claims that police is being lax in its investigations.

The SIT, which was set up following consultations between Singh and Delhi LG Najeeb Jung, has been given two months to submit its report. Singh said the government will have no hesitation in tabling a copy of the SIT report in Lok Sabha, if Speaker Sumitra Mahajan so directs.

He assured the House that the government would "act strongly against anyone trying to hurt the sentiments of people believing in any religion or faith". "As soon as I learnt of the incident, I spoke to the LG and decided to set up the SIT," the home minister said.

The suspected burning down of the Dilshad Garden church was raised in Lok Sabha with Opposition members condemning the incident as well as "attempts to give it a communal colour".

P Karunakaran of CPM alleged the incident was "pre-planned and not an accident". "The intention is to turn it into a sensitive communal issue," said Karunakaran, even as other Opposition MPs, including those from Congress, associated themselves with him.
