Vipin, who is posted at Barakhamba police station in the heart of the capital, fired at himself around 8.00am, a few hours after issuing his service pistol from the police station.
"He was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital here, where his condition is stated to be critical," a police official said.
Vipin hails from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. His marriage was fixed for February 10.
Police said what caused Vipin to shoot at himself is being probed.
