With the electoral rolls expected to be finalised by January 5-6, a formal announcement of the elections could be round the corner. The polls are likely to so timed that they are held ahead of the Budget session of Parliament due in the third week of February.
This will be the third election in which Delhiites will vote following the 2013 assembly poll that threw up a hung House and last year's Lok Sabha contest that saw a resurgent BJP led by Narendra Modi winning all seven seats.
The forthcoming contest will be held in the backdrop of BJP winning a string of state polls after forming the government at the Centre. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, who led his party to a surprise 28-seat haul in 2013, faces a stiff test as he takes on a confident BJP.
The Delhi BJP unit has often seen senior leaders being at odds with one another and this time the party has not announced a chief ministerial candidate. AAP on the other is battling the perception that it has not been serious about governance in the context of its brief stay in office.

Congress is seen as the underdog in the polls and the party's task will be to see if it can re-emerge as the second pole in Delhi politics. With BJP and AAP seeking a clear mandate, it remains to be seen if voters deliver a decisive mandate.
As one year of central rule in Delhi also draws to a close on February 18, the state elections could be held in the second or third week of February.
A formal announcement can be expected to quicken political activity as parties finalise candidates and raise the pitch of their campaigns. Already AAP and BJP have begun their public outreach by way of radio, posters and hoardings. The election will be a one day affair.
The timing of the elections will also take into account annual school examinations including those conducted by national boards that usually start early March.
In 2013, AAP formed a government that lasted 49 days with the support of 8 Congress MLAs and one JD(U) legislator. AAP has announced candidates for all 70 seats including that of Kejriwal who had scored a major victory by defeating three-time CM Shiela Dikshit.
