The senior executive official posted with assistant committee on commerce with the Rajya Sabha said that he received a call from a number starting with 080-*****128 on January 2; the caller claimed to be a senior banker and asked him to reveal the 16 digit number of his debit card and the ATM PIN.
At first, the officer was suspicious and denied to share the information over the phone but the imposter was persistent. The official claimed that he kept asking for the bank details in a very authentic manner. In his complaint the senior officer said that he was busy with an important work, so he gave him the details.
Within 20 minutes the official received a message on his mobile phone saying that Rs 9,999 was withdrawn from his account. Then, again Rs 1,000 was deducted while the rest was deducted within an hour before he could reach his bank and block the transfer of funds.
A case of cheating was registered at the Parliament street police station under section 419 and 420 IPC, and under sections 66A of the IT Act. The case has been taken up on a priority basis and the information provided by the complainant has been shared with the economic offences wing.
