"There will be respite from power crisis during the coming summer and in the next two years we hope that the people of Delhi do not require diesel generator sets," he said.
Describing the efforts in this direction as a "Mumbaikar's gift to Delhi", he said the concern was not so much about generation as about transmitting power to meet the NCR's needs.
"Transmission system in Delhi is weak, it has not seen enough investments over the last 10-12 years, the distribution network at the last mile has seen burnt transformers ... terribly under-rated transformers could have resulted in grid almost collapsing."
Goyal is from Mumbai, the country's financial capital where inverters or generators as well as stabilisers are rare. In contrast, all of these are part of everyday life for residents of the national capital due to years of neglect.
The Centre is working with a Rs 7,700 crore plan to improve and expand Delhi's transmission and distribution networks. The plan includes upgrading infrastructure, laying more transmission lines, underground cabling, smart metering to stop wrong billing and emergency response systems.
The plan was drawn up in the aftermath of a storm in May 2014 that damaged nearly 10 transmission towers throughout the northern grid, snapping power supply to Delhi. Several parts of the city suffered blackouts for several days till supply was restored through emergency steps. Delhi recorded a peak power demand of 6,000 mw last summer.
