Rape survivor’s family upset over Uber email

NEW DELHI: The December 5 cab rape survivor and her family say they were disappointed and angry after they received an email from Uber announcing it has resumed its service in Delhi.

On Friday, the app-based cab service had sent an email to all its users informing them it had resumed operations in the capital.

Call it a consequence of mistrust or anger, they had uninstalled the app from their mobile phones after the incident. The survivor and her family members had decided that they won't use it ever again until the cab service upgraded its safety measures. When on Friday they got the email sent to all customers, they thought of checking if any changes had been brought about.

Around midnight, the survivor's father reinstalled the app. He even tried booking a cab from his residence. According to him, just one cab was available near his locality at that time. The app didn't look any different from what it was before the ban, he said.

The family then contacted Douglas Widgor, an American lawyer who is assisting them in filing a suit against Uber in US. "The company had the audacity to send her an email that they are re-entering the Delhi market and implied that she should feel sorry for the drivers who have been out of work—no mention in the email of the horror that she continues to go through. We hope the Indian government ensures that Uber follows the appropriate laws and protocol," Widgor said.

Widgor said his client was ignored and that "she was not given the opportunity to share her views". He added: "We had requested Uber that the rape survivor play a role in the discussions leading to any potential return to Delhi. My client and I are very concerned that Uber is placing profits over people and we want to do whatever we can to ensure that another sexual assault or rape doesn't happen."
