22-yr-old student hangs self

NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old pursuing a course in designing at School of Planning and Architecture allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at the institute hostel on Friday afternoon. No suicide note was found in her room, but police said that she was suffering from depression after failing to score in three papers in the last semester.

The girl, identified as Pounami Kar, was found hanging by her roommates. The girls immediately informed the hostel warden who, in turn, informed police. A team from IP Estate police station reached the hostel within a few minutes. Family members of the girl, who stay in south Kolkata, have been informed.

Police are scanning the mobile phone of the girl to find out what was the immediate trigger for her taking the extreme step. Her friends are also being questioned. Preliminary investigations suggest Pounami was depressed over her marks and had even expressed the wish to end her life earlier. Police have ruled out foul play in the incident.
