NEW DELHI: Senior Indian Forest Services officer Sanjiv Chaturvedi, who was unceremoniously removed as the chief vigilance officer of AIIMS, may head the anti-corruption branch of Delhi government which looks into bribery and corruption cases involving officials.

Sources say the Aam Aadmi Party government is keen on appointing the whistleblower officer, who is credited with exposing a number of scams, and will be writing to the Centre soon for his repatriation to the state cadre. The anti-corruption branch, a low-profile department during Congress rule, is set to be ramped up under the new government.

"He is a good officer and it will be great if he joins," said deputy CM-designate Manish Sisodia on Friday. Chaturvedi refused to comment on the development.

The IFS officer, currently serving as deputy secretary in AIIMS after being stripped of his additional charge as CVO in August last year, still has more than a year to serve at the institute.

"The Delhi government has to give a letter of its willingness to accept him and the health ministry will have to issue a no objection certificate (NOC) for repatriation. The matter shall then be referred to the Cabinet committee on appointments that is chaired by the Prime Minister for final approval," said a senior official.

He said the AAP government's decision is likely to be accepted because the Centre may want to avoid a confrontation with the AAP government at the moment.

Chaturvedi's tenure as CVO at AIIMS was mired in controversy. He was at loggerheads with Union health minister J P Nadda, who had before joining the Cabinet, written to the then health minister demanding his removal from the post.

The AAP had questioned the move and even held protests demanding Chaturvedi's reinstatement but the government did not give in.

The IFS officer is credited with exposing several scams including the grabbing of forest land in Haryana. At AIIMS, he initiated major penalty proceedings against senior officials for alleged financial irregularities and unearthed a fraud in the tendering process for security guards and installation of security equipment at the institute.
