The clash was triggered when a family from nearby Pradhan Enclave area went to the police station to get an FIR registered against two bike-borne men who, they alleged, had accused two of their kids of having stolen money and taken them along. The parents said they made a PCR call and the children returned soon after. The family, however, went ahead and lodged a complaint.
The police and MLAs have different versions of the incident. While the MLAs say the cops had initially refused to register an FIR which led to tempers flaring up, a senior police officer told TOI: "A PCR call of two children being abducted from Burari area was received around 5.30pm on Friday. The children were recovered within a few minutes and the accused were apprehended. A copy of the FIR was given to the parents."

The MLAs say the police misbehaved and ordered a sudden lathicharge. One of the protesters had informed Sanjeev Jha, AAP MLA from Burari, about the incident and he arrived at the police station. Jha has alleged in his complaint that a constable pointed his rifle at him. Soon, he was joined by Akhilesh Tripathi, AAP MLA from Model Town, and his supporters.
While TOI, despite many attempts, could not contact Jha, Tripathi blamed the police for the incident and alleged it was a conspiracy by some political parties to malign AAP. "Instead of registering a case, the police officials at the gate misbehaved with Jha. One of the police personnel pointed his gun at Jha and pushed him. We wanted an FIR to be registered against the policeman and were told that the DCP was on his way to the police station and an FIR would be registered after he approved it," said Tripathi. "While we were waiting inside, the police suddenly lathicharged our supporters and attacked us. Both Sanjeev and I got injured in the incident.''
The police, however, claim that the family of the boys and AAP supporters wanted to beat up the two accused and were demanding their custody. When this request was turned down, they began protesting outside the police station.
The clash, according to the police, broke out after Jha wanted to take his car inside the police station, which did not have any sticker, and got agitated when he was not allowed. His supporters began to pelt stones at the police which then retaliated. According to the police, five vehicles were damaged. Jha's version could not be obtained.
The police have registered an FIR under IPC sections relating to rioting, unlawful assembly, obstructing public servant, assaulting a public servant, causing hurt and criminal intimidation and under the law on prevention of damage to public property.
Meanwhile, the BJP was quick to attack AAP and its MLAs for their "anarchic" attitude. Condemning the incident, BJP president Satish Upadhyay said: "The incident is a result of false ego of AAP MLAs due to which AAP workers and some innocent passersby were injured. The behavior of the MLAs is anarchic. The police should take appropriate action after investigating the incident."
