City temperature to remain above normal, says Met

NEW DELHI: Delhiites can expect another week of warm days with the Met department predicting that both maximum and minimum temperatures will be 2-3 degrees above normal. Light rain and thunderstorms are also on the cards next week, likely between Monday and Wednesday.

"During the last three days, the weather of northwest India has been affected by active western disturbances. The western Himalayan region, particularly Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, have been experiencing widespread moderate rainfall and snowfall activity since then. As western disturbances remained located mostly north of the 30 degree North latitude, the rainfall activity over the northwestern plains was mostly insignificant, other than in parts of Punjab," said BP Yadav, director, India Meteorological Department.

However, he explained that while rainfall activity has been missing, the western disturbances and their induced cyclonic circulations resulted in a change in wind direction. Warm and moist easterly winds blowing over northwest and central India saw temperatures over these regions rise by 1-5 degrees above normal.

Delhi for instance has been witnessing maximum temperatures that are 3-4 degrees above normal and minimum temperatures that are 3-5 degrees normal. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was five degrees above normal at 28.9 degrees Celsius while the minimum was three degrees above normal at 14.4 degrees Celsius. The day temperature in Gurgaon and Palam touched almost 30 degrees at 29.7 degrees Celsius and 29.3 degrees Celsius respectively.

The western Himalayan region will continue to receive fairly widespread light to moderate precipitation between February 18 and 20 and widespread activity from February 23 and 25. Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh will be impacted strongly by this.
